Deep Drawing: The Perfect Technique for Your Design?

As an engineer, you are always looking for the most efficient and cost-effective production methods. Deep drawing is a versatile technique that can produce excellent results, but when is it the right choice? And how do you make sure your design is optimally suited for this process?

When is Deep Drawing the Right Choice?

Deep drawing is ideal for producing:

  • Hollow, seamless parts: Think housings, containers and complex geometries.
  • Large series: Deep drawing is very efficient for mass production.
  • Parts with consistent wall thickness: Deep drawing ensures uniform results.
  • Parts made of various metals: Steel, titanium, aluminum, copper and more are suitable.

Design Guidelines for Deep Drawing

Material selection:

  • Choose a material with sufficient stretch, such as stainless steel 304 or 316. Materials with little ability to stretch will crack quickly during the process
  • Consider material thickness; thicker material is stiffer and more resistant to deformation. However, at Mubion we specialize in processing very thin films as thin as 20 microns

Geometry:

  • Avoid sharp corners and abrupt transitions. Sharp corners and transitions prevent the material from flowing, but will constrict.
  • Provide sufficient rounding (radii) to prevent cracking.
  • Consider the draw ratio: the ratio of the diameter of the sheet to the diameter of the finished product. Too small a draw ratio will cause the material not to flow, but to crack.

Tolerances:

  • Deep drawing can achieve accurate tolerances, but keep in mind possible distortion and springback of materials with high internal stresses. Material stresses can often be corrected in the die.
  • Consult with us about achievable tolerances. Tolerances depend on the material, shape, number of operations and dimensions of the product, among other factors.

Surface finish:

  • Deep drawing can produce a smooth surface, but keep in mind possible marks that may be created by the tooling depending on the design.
  • Consider finishing operations if necessary.
